On the outside, Claire Cook has the perfect life. She and her husband, a political dynasty with a path to greatness, live in a townhouse in Manhattan. Her schedule, down to the clothes she's to wear, are planned for her.
However, when they are behind the privacy of closed doors, her perfect husband has a temper. If he believes Claire isn't living up to his standards of a perfect wife, he takes his anger out on her. He has eyes and ears on everything she does...or so he thinks. He doesn't realize for the last several months, Claire has been working on a plan to disappear.
Eva, too, is looking for a chance at a new life. When they happen to run into one another at a bar in the airport, they make a last minute decision to switch tickets. Claire takes Eva's ticket to Oakland, Eva travels to Puerto Rico as Claire. It all changes when Claire's flight, the one Eva is on, goes down. No survivors.
Without options, Claire assume's Eva's identity and uncovers the actual reason Eva was looking for a new life, secrets that now put Claire's life in danger.
It’s been a while since I’ve written a review. Not because I haven’t read anything, but nothing lately has jumped out at me and screamed “Now this is a book I want to talk about!”
Apologies in advance for all the cliches, but this is going to be the thriller of the summer. While some may curl up with a beach read in the summer, I go for the thrillers, books that get my heart racing. This one meets those criteria.
While it may seem that I’ve give a lot away in my summary of the book, all of that is revealed in the cover-flap and essentially takes place in the early portions of the book. So much is left for the reader to dive into.
I love when authors carefully plot out the big reveals, releasing them when the reader is least expecting it. There are quite a few in this one, scenes or big reveals that made me gasp or my jaw drop. Additionally, the characters she crafts in Claire and Eva are truly well-rounded. While my opinion of Claire largely stayed the same throughout, I found my feelings about Eva to transform the most drastically.
Prepare to devote all of your time to this title, for once you start it, you won’t be able to stop. Recommended!
