The Nightmare Before Kissmas by Sara Raasch

Nicholas “Coal” Claus, the Prince of Christmas, used to love Christmas. Thanks to his father’s commercialization of the holiday, Coal has no desire to be involved in the festivities.

After a night of drinking, he has a passionate moment with a stranger behind a bar. This stranger disappears out of the blue, leaving Coal to think he was hallucinating.

Eventually, Coal is unable to ignore his duties as the heir to Christmas. He’s forced to marry Iris, his good friend and the Princess of Easter. This is an arranged marriage that neither of them wants. His competitor: the man behind the bar….who just happens to be Hex, the Prince of Halloween.

As Coal and Hex maneuver their feelings toward one another, Coal learns more about his father’s plan for this forced marriage and the future of the holidays. Suddenly, Coal’s feelings toward Christmas shift; he longs for the joy he felt in celebrating the holiday. Desperate to bring back the true meaning of the holiday, Coal is finally ready to step into the role that’s been waiting for him all his life.

What a fun read! As a lover of Halloween, this was the perfect mash-up for me. I loved Coal’s character, with all his issues. His relationship with his brother is so heartwarming! His relationship with Hex is a complex one. Sure, there’s the hot and steamy but there’s also the underlying issue they share of living up to one’s familial expectations.

All in all, a great read leading up to Christmas! Highly recommended!

I'm spending the day unpacking & reading! I'm attempting to get through some of the books I have checked out from the library. I'm taking a break from holiday rom-com with THE EXPUSIUM by Olga Tokarczuk.
